Welcome to the Mercia Cycling Club Website where you can find out what is going on in the Mercia world. Everyone is welcome at our club evening events so if you're new to cycling or just fancy testing your fitness come and join in!
May I wish all of our members a rather belated happy healthy new year
The season will soon be with us and the mild winter enjoyed so far has resulted in lots of miles and
fit riders – good results will be expected!
The full programme of club time trials is in place starting at the end of March although the first two
events clash with the Majorca trip. Any member not competing who is free on Tuesday evenings is
very welcome to come and assist with the event as time keeper’s assistants and marshals are always
needed.
For new members not too familiar with the governing body’s rules for race clothing the full details
are in the annual handbooks. However for events under British Cycling rules an official Mercia jersey
or skinsuit is required to be worn. The clubs clothing design and colours are registered with British
Cycling, being for Mercia members use only, and it is a requirement in competition that they are
worn. There is also a requirement to wear an approved crash hat.
The rules re clothing in time trials under CTT rules are more relaxed – club clothing can be worn or
any other plain clothing – clothing showing a trade name is not allowed unless it is the official club
clothing. Crash hats are recommended and some clubs do insist on their use in events which they
promote.
I am very pleased to welcome Anne Staley as a member of the Mercia. Anne is a registered club
coach and has a wealth of experience of working in cycling with juniors. The Mercia officials have
recently met with officials from the local council and from the British Cycling development team to
discuss becomes a Go Ride approved club. We have decided to apply to British Cycling to become
approved and are in the process of doing this. Mercia CC will be running events for juniors and
also a basic introduction to cycling course with assistance from British Cycling and the Local Council
cycling development team. The club has two club coaches and will appoint a Child Welfare Officer
who has to become approved - additionally, helpers will be appreciated when we do start to run
events. Officials and helpers will need to be CRB checked but this will be free to members.
This is a very exciting prospect for Mercia. Looking at other clubs who have taken this
opportunity they have seen a growth in their junior members.
Watch this space for more news when the process of becoming approved has moved on.
We are pleased to announce the 2012 Mercia CC Reliability Trial will take place on Sunday 22nd January 2012 from the Club House at Shobnall Fields, Burton on Trent.

2 new winter evening group rides have been organised by some riders who attend the fast group on a Sunday. The first ride will leave the Spread Eagle in Rolleston shortly after 7pm on Tuesdays. The 2nd will leave the railway bridge at Drakelow (on the Stapenhill Road, with the junction to the road to Walton and not now Rosliston Forestry Centre) shortly after 6.30pm (NEW TIME) on Thursdays. The distance will be around 30 miles and will last an 1.25 hours to 1.5 hours. The pace will be steady but around 19mph. Lights both front and rear are a must as well as mudguards and bright reflective clothing as the ride will be on unlit roads. If bad weather the rides will almost certainly be off. It is envisaged only a small number of riders will attend so the group will be small. The rides start w/c 7th November.

Club runs are held every Sunday throughout the year. There are 3 groups to choose from.
The fast group leave Burton Town Hall, promptly at 9:15 a.m. The pace is higher than the medium group and the distance covered is 50-70 miles. Typical average speed over 50 miles is 19-20.5mph. There is a cafe stop half way. We try and aim to keep everyone together until the cafe stop. However as the group gets larger this is becoming increasingly difficult so the route will be made known beforehand in case riders do get dropped. After the cafe the pace home gets a little 'hotter' and we operate every man for himself. Please email Richard Knott or ring 07429 457582 or Simon Parker & Jeff Lea at the club for more information.
The medium paced group leaves Burton Town Hall promptly at 9.15am covering 35-50 miles at 15-18mph. Please call Kieron Patterson on 07505426213 for details.
The slower pace group leaves Burton Town Hall promptly at 9.15am covering 30-50 miles at 14-16mph,
or at the pace of the slowest rider. Please call Tony Marlow on 07973 414284 for details.
We recommend you start with the medium group if you are new to cycling or are not used to fast pace group riding.
Please email Richard Knott or ring 07429 457582 for more information.
Non club members are very welcome on either ride. There are also other rides happening throughout the week. Please see the Events page for details.
